The Alma de Samaná project is an ambitious and groundbreaking development, as it is set to become the first Black woman-owned resort in the Dominican Republic. Located in the Samaná region, this resort seeks to offer a unique blend of luxury, culture, and history, catering to travelers who want an authentic experience deeply rooted in the area’s rich heritage. The resort is not just a celebration of Afro-Dominican culture but also serves as a tribute to the resilience and strength of African slaves who significantly shaped the history of the region. By intertwining contemporary luxury with historical acknowledgment, Alma de Samaná aims to create a space that honors the past while looking forward to the future.

The Samaná region has a profound historical connection to African slaves who were brought to the island during the transatlantic slave trade. In the early 19th century, hundreds of freed African Americans emigrated to the area, significantly influencing its culture, traditions, and demographic makeup. These settlers, along with enslaved Africans who were brought over by the Spanish and French, left an indelible mark on the region’s culture, from the music and dance to the cuisine and language. Alma de Samaná seeks to preserve and highlight these cultural elements, offering guests a deeper understanding of the historical narratives that have shaped Samaná’s unique identity.

By situating itself in Samaná, Alma de Samaná also aims to draw attention to the often-overlooked stories of African descendants in the Dominican Republic. The resort’s mission includes fostering a greater appreciation for the contributions of Afro-descendant communities to the island’s history and culture. Through curated experiences, historical tours, and cultural programming, the resort will provide guests with opportunities to engage with this rich legacy. Alma de Samaná is more than just a resort; it is a cultural landmark that acknowledges the history of African slaves in the region and celebrates the vibrant Afro-Dominican heritage that continues to thrive today.
