History D.E.I.
The Universal Life Building (ULB) has long been a vibrant hub for business, civic engagement, and culture within the Memphis African American community. This historic building once housed the nation’s fourth-largest Black-owned insurance company, employing over 850 people across 10 states and Washington, D.C., providing essential financial services and economic empowerment.
Originally designed in 1947 by renowned architects McKissack & McKissack in the distinctive Egyptian Revival style, the ULB opened in 1949 and remained the headquarters for Universal Life Insurance Company until its closure in 2001. Following its adaptive reuse and reopening in 2018, sustainability became a core focus of the renovation. The project incorporated energy-efficient systems, recycled materials, and waste-reduction practices, ultimately featuring a 50 kW solar parking canopy to support its eco-friendly mission.
Additionally, enhancing public space and walkability within the evolving neighborhood was a priority. Now part of the Memphis Heritage Trail, the Universal Life Building includes a public Historic Gallery, honoring the building’s legacy and the substantial impact of its founders, both locally and nationally.
